Mr. Abbott said Private Health Insurance Administration Council figures showed an extra 17,000 Australians took out private health insurance in the June 2006 quarter, the fourth successive increase in coverage.
He said about 10.2 million Australians were now covered by private hospital or auxiliary policies.
"That is an absolute all-time record," he told parliament.
"It certainly helps to take the pressure off our public hospitals because if the two million admissions to private hospitals a year didn't have private health insurance, sure as anything they would be on the public hospital waiting list."
