More than 1.2 million people, or 1 in 5 residents, had no health-care insurance previous year, a level not seen since 1999, the Census Bureau reported.
The count up of uninsured jumped by more than 225,000 people from 2004 to 2005
The decline in coverage came in spite of a slight increase in the state's median family income over a two-year period. Census officials said the increase of $779, to $45,279, was too tiny to be statistically significant.
Arizona's poverty rate rose to approximately one in seven people, but the gain also was considered outside statistical significance.
